A look at history
With the idea of teaching children and young people in Wilhelmsburg values such as fairness, respect and tolerance through sport, Marvin Willoughby and Jan Fischer jointly founded the association ‘Sport ohne Grenzen e.V.’ (Sport without Borders) in 2006. At the same time, the two managing directors wanted to promote basketball even more strongly in their home town – and to establish a competitive division via an ever-widening base. This desire was fulfilled in September 2013: together with Pascal Roller, Wolfgang Sahm and Jochen Franke, Marvin Willoughby and Jan Fischer presented the Hamburg Towers.
Back in the summer of 2014, Hamburg Towers secured the right to participate in ProA, the second-highest league in German basketball. After years of steady development, the team won the ProA championship in the 2018/19 season, securing promotion to the Bundesliga (BBL). The Towers reached the BBL playoffs for the first time in the 2020/21 season. Just in time for the start of the 2022/23 season preparations, the Towers presented themselves with a complete makeover: to mark their naming partnership with the environmental company Veolia, the Towers appeared in a new look and finally established themselves as a fixture in German basketball.
